Carports, otherwise known as car shelters, are pretty sturdy structures, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to concern yourself with the effects of wind and time. Properly anchoring your carport will keep it firmly in place during storms and will prevent warping and bending of the material. Here’s what to know about how you can anchor your car shelter.

Earth

You can anchor your car shelter in dirt, grass, or gravel using 20” long rebar spikes that go through the holes in your base rail and down into the soil. But these spikes are typically not strong enough to withstand harsh weather conditions, which is why many people use spiral-auger anchors instead.

A set of 36” anchors with nut-and-washer fasteners can really secure your carport deep into the earth. Try to ensure that you have enough of these anchors so that you have no more than 16’ of space between them.

Concrete

If you’re going to pour a concrete foundation for your carport, you can you can use a special type of concrete anchor that requires you to drill holes about 6” deep into your concrete. These concrete wedge anchors are secured through the holes of your base rail and into the concrete, where the bottom part of the anchor expands to create a wedge that holds your structure in place. The main caveat is to avoid drilling your holes too close to the edge of your concrete pad, since it can crack.
